The Benefits of Drinking Mint Tea

Mint Tea for Digestive Health

Drinking mint tea may alleviate digestive symptoms such as gas, bloating, and indigestion. Mint works by relaxing the digestive system and reducing pain. It also prevents smooth muscles from contracting, which may relieve intestinal cramps.

A study involving 926 people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) found that drinking peppermint oil for at least two weeks provided significantly better symptom relief.

As for how to consume peppermint oil, it is available in capsule form. In a study of 72 people with IBS, peppermint oil capsules reduced IBS symptoms by 40% after 4 weeks, compared to only 24.3% with a placebo. Additionally, capsules containing peppermint oil reduced the occurrence and severity of nausea and vomiting in a study of 200 people undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.

While there are no studies examining the benefits of drinking mint after meals for digestion, it is possible that the tea may have similar effects.

Mint Tea for Weight Loss

Mint tea is naturally calorie-free and has a sweet and delicious flavor, making it a smart choice for people looking to lose weight. In a small study of 13 healthy people to determine the weight loss benefits of drinking peppermint oil, taking a peppermint oil capsule led to decreased appetite compared to not consuming peppermint.

However, there is not much research on the effects of mint tea on weight, and more research is needed on mint and weight loss.

Mint Tea for Pregnancy

Mint tea is a common beverage during pregnancy, and very few adverse effects have been reported so far when consumed in small amounts (1-2 cups per day).

While herbal teas like mint tea do not typically contain caffeine, they can upset the stomach or have other side effects when consumed in large doses.

Mint tea is often touted as a great solution for many common pregnancy-related symptoms. Specifically, it is known as a natural remedy for the following:

  • Reducing nausea and vomiting
  • Relieving heartburn
  • Soothing an upset stomach
  • Reducing headaches

However, research on the benefits of drinking mint tea for pregnant women is rare and has not been conducted directly on pregnant women.

Mint Tea on an Empty Stomach

The benefits of drinking mint tea daily include boosting energy levels and reducing daytime fatigue. While there are no studies on drinking mint specifically, research suggests that the natural compounds in mint may have beneficial effects on energy. Aromatherapy with peppermint oil also reduces daytime sleepiness.

Mint is a popular flavor due to its pleasant smell and taste, and drinking mint tea can help freshen breath and may have other benefits in combating bad breath. Peppermint oil also has antibacterial properties that may help reduce the bacteria that cause gum disease and cavities.

Mint Tea for Respiratory Health

The vapors from essential oils like peppermint oil have antibacterial properties and may help relieve some types of upper respiratory infections. Inhaling steam and vapors can also be helpful in relieving nasal congestion from colds and other upper respiratory infections. Some people find that the vapors from peppermint tea containing menthol may also help.

Mint also has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. For this reason, the benefits of drinking mint tea may include treating sinus congestion due to infections, colds, and allergies.

In addition, menthol (the active compound in mint) improves airflow in the nasal cavity. Therefore, the steam from drinking mint tea may help make breathing feel easier. While the effect of drinking mint tea on nasal congestion has not been studied, the evidence suggests that it may be helpful.

Mint Tea for Menstrual Cramps

Mint may relieve menstrual cramps as it acts as a muscle relaxant. While drinking mint tea has not been studied for this purpose, the compounds in mint have been shown to improve symptoms.

In a study of 127 women with painful menstrual cramps, mint extract capsules were found to be as effective as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in reducing pain intensity and duration. It is possible that drinking mint tea may have similar effects.

Other Benefits of Drinking Mint Tea

Other benefits of drinking mint tea include:

  • Improved Focus and Memory: Some research suggests that mint may improve cognitive function and alertness.
  • Immune System Support: Mint's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may help boost the immune system.
  • Detoxification: Mint may aid in detoxification by supporting liver function and promoting elimination of waste products.
  • Freshens Breath: Mint's refreshing aroma and antibacterial properties can help freshen breath and reduce bad breath.
  • Soothes Nausea: Mint may help soothe nausea and vomiting due to its antispasmodic properties.

Drinking Mint Tea Before Bed

Drinking mint tea daily before bed is an ideal choice because it is caffeine-free and has muscle-relaxing properties that may help promote relaxation before sleep. However, there is not much scientific evidence that mint promotes sleep
